Category talk:WebM videos

What is the purpose of this category? It seems quite useless I need to say. Same as the recently deleted "Uploaded by UploadWizard" category. I don't see any benefits of this cat, even less when file formats should be handled directly by the MediaWiki software in future, as I hope (for search etc). --#Reaper (talk) 21:03, 11 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please auto-add this category to *all* WebM videos (currently it's useless)

[edit]

The category is useful mainly or at least partly because it enables selecting actual video files in petscan. For example, I was looking for all WebM videos that intersect with subcats of Category:Short films for the Short films videos cat. Or is there another way to make petscan show only webm videos or one filetype (videos)?

The problem is that most WebM videos don't have this category set so currently it's not useful and probably more problematic than anything else because it misleadingly suggests the files in this category are all the WebM videos that are on WMC which isn't true.

I don't know why categories for filetypes aren't automatically added. The same also applies for categories like Category:Animated GIF files (and the subcats by file-size) and so on. Is there already a phabricator issue for this? Prototyperspective (talk) 11:58, 25 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
