Hello, Hectonichus!

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Cypraeidae - Palmadusta diluculum-2.JPG, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Hello,

please try to avoid redundant categories. For example, if you use "Erronea", do not use "Cypraeidae", as this last category contains the first. See COM:OVERCAT#Over-categorization

Modifying images

edit

I like what you did with File:Insect Safari - lepidopteran 028.jpg, but in general when substantively modifying someone else's image where the photographer did not request the modification, you should upload under a different name, and link the two images by using {{Extracted from}} on the new file and {{Extracted}} on the old. You should also describe what you actually did (not just "improved") and should indicate on the new file both the original credits for the photo and credit yourself for your modifications. - Jmabel ! talk 17:29, 3 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

{{Cc-by-sa-3.0}}

edit

Hi, I noticed that you were adding Category:CC-BY-SA-3.0 on your uploads, presumably because you wish to release them under that license. The only proper way to do that is to add {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} (or {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}}) on the image page; once you've done that, please remove the category, as it is added by the license template already (it's hidden, so you may not notice it, but it's there). Let me know if you need any help. Prof. Professorson (talk) 13:53, 14 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hello Hectonichus,
You must be aware, that I corrected some of your categories (on Cheliderpeton, Requienia, Inversoceras, Oonocerina, Planiscutellum, Metacalymene, Solenopeltis...).
A category should never self-categorize itself.
You also mix "Species" and "Genus".
Could you be more careful about that?
By the way, I added the {{Taxonavigation}}, {{TPDB}} Thanks and good contributions. Liné1 (talk) 11:55, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

File:Diplocaulidae - Diplocaulus magnicornis-001.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Yes, I think you now have the correct species name. I am glad you put your pictures in the article as they were of excellent quality. I used a book called "A Swift Guide to Butterflies of Mexico and Central America" by Jeffrey Glassberg that described in detail the differences between this species and Eueides isabella as well as several very similar species. It is amazing how closely they mimic each other. Keep up the good work. Dger (talk) 15:49, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Misidentified plant images

edit

Hi Hectonichus, I strongly suspect that the above photographs show Geranium pyrenaicum, not Geranium molle. There are no leaves close to the fruits in the images with flowers or fruits and the pedicels just below the flowers/fruits do not show any of the typical rather long hairs of Geranium molle, but the typical fine, very short hairs of Geranium pyrenaicum. The calyx is not visible in Image:Geraniaceae - Geranium molle.JPG, which suggests that the petals might be much longer than the calyx and the colour of the flower does not look as reddish as usual for Geranium molle, but exactly like Geranium pyrenaicum. I asked the users on an identification page in the German wikipedia (de:Wikipedia:Redaktion Biologie/Bestimmung) about the ID and got the answer "wahrscheinlich 'Geranium pyrenaicum'", i. e. "probably 'Geranium pyrenaicum'". I do not believe that there are any lookalikes in the area where the photographs were taken (i.e. in the French Alps) if Geranium molle can be excluded, at least not according to the Flora alpina. I am not completely sure about Image:Geraniaceae - Geranium molle-1.JPG, but if it was part of the same plants, it should be Geranium pyrenaicum as well. I have the intention to move the three images to Category:Geranium pyrenaicum and adapt the descriptions accordingly, unless you disagree with my suggestion. Wishing a Happy New Year 2013 to you --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 20:52, 6 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Robert! The plant of these images had been identified as "Geraniun molle" by 2-3 users of the Italian Forum Natura Mediterraneo. But probably they were wrong. Please do whatever is necessary. Ciao.

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thanks for uploading File:Phrynichidae - Damon medius.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. Misnamed Lithops

edit

Dear Hectonichus, the image you uploaded labelled Lithops salicola ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Aizoaceae_-_Lithops_salicola.JPG ) is definitely not of this species. You need only look at other pictures of this species to see that this picture is not of this species. It is likely Fenestraria (a monotypic genus, also from here in southern Africa) https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Fenestraria_rhopalophylla Abu Shawka (talk) 23:49, 10 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Una pianta appenninica

edit

--Khruner (talk) 13:54, 26 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Capito, speravo che l'ambiente particolare potesse aiutare nell'identificazione, comunque grazie lo stesso. --Khruner (talk) 07:52, 27 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Creating Categories

edit

Hi! Thanks for contributing new photos and new categories. However, please note the format for taxonomic templates is a little different than that of Wikipedia articles. The taxonavigation is structured differently: e.g. the taxobox template isn't used, instead we use Template:Taxonavigation. Also, the category created still needs to be placed into its own category, which does work the same way as Wikipedia categorization (e.g. Category:Galeodes blanchardi would go into Category:Galeodes which goes into Category:Galeodidae). Also, just FYI it's probably best to stick to major ranks like order, family, genus, and only create categories for other ranks (subfamily, superorder, etc.) if and when a single category is very full, as more in-between categories can make browsing images harder. Butterflies pictures

edit

Hi Hectonichus, thank you for uploading your butterfly pictures! May I just make a small photographic suggestion: perhaps you shouldn't increase saturation and sharpness too much, it makes the pictures a bit unrealistic ;-) Cheers--LamBoet (talk) 12:10, 24 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi Hectonichus, this picture is Argynnis aglaja: see e.g. the shape of the discal markings of the hindwing and the presence of a basal spot in s1b of the forewing. --LamBoet (talk) 18:18, 28 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Colias crocea

edit

Hi Hectonichus, this picture and this one are not Colias crocea (as can be seen from the background colour and the thinner black margins). They show either C. hyale or C. alfacariensis: as these two species cannot be distinguished on pictures, please simply label the pictures as Colias sp.

Another thing: I see that you have been replacing many pictures on wikipedia with your own pictures. Don't take this the wrong way, but I think you shouldn't do this for the moment, because as I already told you, your pictures have unrealistic colours...--LamBoet (talk) 17:04, 14 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

You are right! I think this one could be C. alfacariensis, as the fore wings have a more rounded apex than C. hyale.
My course of action is to replace in Wikipedia a photo of another user only if I have a better picture or more representative of the characteristics of the treated species .
In the future I will try to limit my interventions with Photoshop. However I do not think that such a treatment in any case lead to unrealistic photos. Usually I just correct a little overexposed or underexposed photos, and, where appropriate, I accentuate a little the sharpness.
Many thanks for your suggestions. Since we have similar interests, let’s know each other better and let’s keep in touch.
Ciao. Ettore
Hi Ettore, thank you for your understanding :-) Photoshop is a great tool but its automatized contrast/colour/tone functions are sometimes more violent than they seem to be. With such nuanced subjects as butterflies and flowers, a trained eye easily notices it when colours have been too much tampered with ;-)
As regards the identification of these two Colias’s: my opinion (shared by other lepidopterists I have talked with) is that the commonly quoted morphological criteria are not enough to separate hyale from alfacariensis based on a picture: these criteria are quite inconstant and only work when considering a series of specimens from a given location. So I really recommend to keep these two pictures as Unidentified Colias, unless you have some strong external evidence (hostplant, caterpillar, biotope) to support the identification as alfacariensis.--LamBoet (talk) 22:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Italia

Gentile Hectonichus,

Grazie ancora e a presto,

If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

File:Chrysomelidae - Eumolpus candens.JPG

edit

Hi, you wouldn't by any chance happen to know or remember how this beetle came to be identified as "Eumolpus candens"? It's been bugging me for years, since I don't think this specific name has been formally published in the scientific literature so far as I can see.
